The story
The suffering in Palestine goes back a long way.
Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire until it was destroyed at the end of the First World War. Several Arab countries were at this time placed under temporary administration until they were considered ready for independence. Palestine was put under British mandate in 1922 by the League of Nations.
However, earlier in 1917, the British Foreign Minister, Arthur Balfour, made what became known as the Balfour Declaration. It promised ‘a national home for the Jewish people’ in Palestine (not a nation state) but it insisted that nothing should be done to prejudice the rights of the existing non-Jewish community.
Between the two world wars Zionists moved into the land and settled, but the rise of Nazism in Germany increased the flow of people with those fleeing persecution in Europe. During the Second World War Palestinians and Zionists ‘agreed’ not to confront each other. However, as soon as the war was over violence and confrontation erupted. It was a time when the suffering of the Jews under the Nazis had created a huge sense of guilt in the international community.
In early 1947 the British announced that they would withdraw from Palestine, and in November, under pressure from Zionist groups, the UN passed a resolution granting just over half the land of Palestine for the creation of the state of Israel against the wishes of the majority. Jordan then ruled over the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and Egypt over Gaza. Tragically the attempt to divide Palestine peacefully failed, and in the bitter war that followed Jewish militia groups seized more than three-quarters of the land (see maps below).
More than 750,000 Palestinians, whose families had lived there for centuries, became homeless refugees. Many fled to neighbouring countries in a great exodus. Twenty years later, in 1967, Israel, by then a powerful military nation supported by the USA, occupied the remaining Palestinian territories controlled by Jordan and Egypt, as well as parts of Lebanon and Syria.
Prisoners
Since then there have been recurrent incursions into even those few areas nominally under Palestinian control. Israel’s army now occupies what is called the West Bank [the land on the west bank of the Jordan river] and East Jerusalem and Gaza [a coastal strip of land bordering the Mediterranean]. The whole of Palestine is now under Israeli military control with Gaza entirely imprisoned, with Israel controlling all entry and exit points.
This process of occupation has been aided by the creation of hundreds of illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied zone. The Palestinians are now prisoners in their own land. As a result of this injustice, violence has become endemic.
Under the occupation an ‘apartheid wall’ and a system of Israeli-only highways have been built, effectively confining the Palestinian communities to small and fragmented reservations or ‘bantustans’.
Hundreds of military barriers and checkpoints prevent Palestinians reaching their schools, hospitals and fields. More than 12,000 houses have been demolished, and thousands of olive groves, some hundreds of years old, have been destroyed.
Many UN resolutions have been passed condemning Israel. All have been ignored. The Wall has been deemed illegal by the International Court of Justice. Many Jews in Israel and across the world oppose the Occupation and its illegal suppression of the Palestinian people. But with powerful international allies like the United States, Israel can ignore all criticism.
Thousands of Philistines slain by David’s armies. “Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” I Sam. 18:5,6,7 and 23:5; II Sam. 5:25 and 8:1
200 Philistine men, killed by David to obtain their foreskins with which to purchase Saul’s daughter to be his wife. I Sam. 18:27 (But that’s minor surgery!) ???
Episode 1. Civil War!
Having killed a giant and married into the royal family with a gift of foreskins, David falls foul of his father-in-law Saul and becomes a mercenary for the hated Philistines. They give him the town of Ziklag (from where he massacres Amalekite nomads of Sinai). But when Saul & Co get trashed by Philistines at Mount Gilboa, Saul’s son Ish-Baal (inauspicious name,that!) is proclaimed king, somewhere east of the river Jordan.
David, now resident at Hebron, is also proclaimed king. Hostile co-existence, laced with a variety of arbitrary murders, ensues for over 2 years, at which point the assassination of Ish-Baal leaves the field free for David to rule “all Israel” (most of which, of course, is still in the hands of the Philistines).
Episode 2. The Capture of Jerusalem.
Our hero decides he needs a new residence in the hills – the town of Jebus. Oddly enough, this ‘Jebusite’ (Canaanite? Philistine?) enclave, in the heart of ‘Hebrew territory’, had never succumbed to Israelite conquest. Yet David has no problem taking the ‘citadel’ (how could he, with the LORD behind his every move). The blind and lame get short shrift from our conquering hero:
“And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites … which spake unto David, saying … thou shalt not come in hither … Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion … And David said … Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind that are hated of David’s soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. – 1 Samuel 5.6,9.
Episode 3. Conquering everywhere else – just like that!
The brevity (and brutality) with which the Holy Book records the conquest of the whole of Syrio/Palestine is breathtaking:
Defeat of the Philistines:
“And after this it came to pass that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took Methegammah out of the hand of the Philistines.” – 2 Samuel 8.1.
Conquest of the North:
“David smote also Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his border at the river Euphrates … David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men. David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David.” – 2 Samuel 8.3,6.
Genocide and conquest of the South:
“For it came to pass, when David was in Edom, and Joab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain, after he had smitten every male in Edom.” – 2 Kings 11.15.
Mass Slaughter in the Transjordan:
“And he smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.” – 2 Samuel 8.2.
“And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah.” – 2 Samuel 11.1.

I find it to be absolutely ridiculous that the bible feeds us all kinds of lies and contradictions about “love your enemy”, and yet, we see mass slaughter of suckling infants and innocent boys, girls, unarmed men, women (old and young), and innocent domestic farm animals by the tens of thousands! It is clear that the inconsistent man-altered, man-corrupted and morally corrupt bible is nothing but a false book, and can not be a Divine and Perfect Holy Book!
I challenge any Jew or Christian to produce ONE, JUST ONE Noble Verse from the Muslims’ Noble Quran that condones killing of innocent children, women or even hostile enemy men who drop their weapons before Muslims (surrender).
